Sunday Salon: Reverting back to my old ways?

After finishing two books in a week, I thought my reading habits were beginning to change. "Perhaps I'm finally rediscovering my passion for reading," I said to ABM. However, I hit a rough patch this week. I struggled through the one book I did finish (Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter) and I am stalled on two others.

Beth Moore is a well-loved writer in women's Bible study circles. I've watched her on TV and found her engaging. I expected to enjoy reading one of her books, but Get Out of That Pit: Straight Talk about God's Deliverance didn't work for me. Maybe I am not the intended audience. I've been a Christian for a long time, and this felt like ground that I'd covered many times. That's not to say that it is a bad book, but I think there may be someone else who needs its message more. Back to the library it goes.

Another book that I was looking forward to was Rex Libris Volume One: I, Librarian. It is a compilation of the first five comic books in the Rex Libris series. The story follows the librarian of an intergalactic library who uses any means necessary to retrieve overdue books and fees. I've made it to Chapter 3 and my feelings about it are mixed. The story is amusing in spots, but many of the scientific and philosophical rants are over my head and go on too long. The art has a pleasant blocky look, but the print is WAY too small. If the story was a bit more engaging, I wouldn't mind struggling through my issue with the print. It just hasn't grabbed me.

My attention span is getting shorter as I get older, and I am fighting to overcome that. Right now, I want to ditch these books and read Garlic and Sapphires or Sabrina . I know that both will be easy reads for me. I'm wondering if reading these less-challenging books will still help me achieve my goal of sweeping the cobwebs from my brain and preventing senility.

At the very least, maybe the lighter reads will help get you back on the reading track you want to be on.

I think my problem is I want 'fluffier' books right now. I have so much else going on, I want to just sit down and enjoy a book without having to think about it too much.

Regular readers of this blog know that I struggle with that every week. I tell myself that I want to read a challenging and intellectual novel, but then I keep leaning toward the fluffier books.
