Should I read the Twilight series?

This morning I watched Stephanie Meyer on TV, being treated like a rock star at a release event for her latest book, Breaking Dawn. For those who haven't fallen under Meyer's spell yet, the Twilight Saga is about an average teenager named Bella and the vampire she falls in love with. I've heard brief mentions of Twilight here and there, but when I started getting repeated queries about it while working ChaCha I knew that it must be hot. So now I'm asking myself, "Do I want to read this?"

The popularity of the books is causing my indecision. Although I like to be aware of what is going on in pop culture, I don't want to be a lemming and follow what the masses are doing. It is a tricky balancing act. For instance, I have no desire to watch The Dark Knight simply because everyone around me has seen it and is talking about how good it is. However, I don't feel the same way about Doctor Who, which also has a large fan base. The difference is that none of my off-line friends watch Doctor Who so it feels like I've discovered something that others haven't.

On the other hand, I was introduced to the Harry Potter books while watching the old Rosie O'Donnell talk show. Half the series had already been published and had a fanatic readership before I picked it up. If I had skipped it because it was popular, I would have missed out on reading something that I ended up enjoying a lot. I actually bought all the Harry Potter books and you guys know that I don't buy books.

Right now I am leaning toward reading at least the first book, Twilight, for two reasons. The first reason is that Stephanie Meyer seems to be a writer in the mold of another author who has always intrigued me, Janet Lambert. To be a housewife and mother who also manages to write and sell books is a fantasy of mine, so I am fascinated when I hear that someone else has done it. The second reason is that there is a movie based on Twilight that will be released in December 2008. In most cases, I prefer to read the book before I watch the related movie.

So it looks like I've almost talked myself into reading the books. Of course, if they are as popular with the teenagers here as the Harry Potter books were, then they won't be available at the library. That will definitely make my mind up for me; I'm not interested enough in the books to purchase them.

I read Twilight on the recommendation of a friend. I loved it! So much so, that I couldn't wait to read New Moon. Boy was I disappointed.

I have Eclipse in my e-reader, but I am afraid to start it -- I just don't want to be disappointed again.

I can recommend Twilight without reservation. It is a very engaging novel. The rest of the series - I'm not sure about.
